Unknown Journey ran with great credit at Brighton on Monday 19th August, finishing a gallant third in what proved to be a truly testing contest over the trip.
Breaking well from the stalls, Unknown Journey settled into a handy mid-division position through the first half of the race. With just under six furlongs to travel, the front-running Mc’ted injected real pace into proceedings, a move that caught several rivals flat-footed, including our runner, who was soon under a strong drive from jockey William Carson.
To his credit, Unknown Journey stuck to the task gamely, staying on all the way to the line and eventually claiming a deserved third place behind the strong-staying winner Fighting Poet, who overhauled long-time leader Mc’ted to score by three and a quarter lengths.
After the race, jockey William Carson gave us his verdict on the performance:
“He ran very well and did everything right, probably that pace over a mile would be better. The last furlong I came there but I was dead, normal pace you would probably get away with it , but we went so quick and in the final furlong he was just starting to backpedal. It was one of those races where everything had been killed off trying to stay with the pace. He kept going, but if that pace was over a mile he’d see it out very good and I think that would be his trip. That’s not to say he won’t win over this trip if there was one that suited , because ninety-nine times out of one hundred they don’t go that quick and I should imagine he’ll settle. He did everything right , he’ll win races.
Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following morning:
“Unknown Journey ran well. I was very pleased with him. I thought he put in a better performance. He obviously finished third and ran very well, the jockey gave him a good ride. Trip-wise, I think he does stay a mile and two furlongs but anywhere from a mile to a mile two will be fine. It was a very fast run race. There was a lot of pace in the race all the way through but he plugged on to be fair and seemed to cope with the track, so I wouldn’t be worried about going back down there at any stage. He’s absolutely fine this morning, he’d eaten up, legs and limbs fine so I’m very pleased with him and also very pleased with everybody yesterday, we were very well supported and we had a lot of owners there.”
It was another honest and determined effort from Unknown Journey , who continues to show a great attitude in his races, and he is sure to provide plenty more exciting days for connections.
