There’s some fantastic action on offer this weekend, with the third and final day of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting looking the pick of the action. I’ve focused on their card for the tips this week, with a strong fancy in the Cheveley Park Stakes, plus a confident each-way play in the Cambridgeshire Handicap.
2:25 Newmarket – TRUE LOVE (7/2 generally)
Aidan O’Brien has won five of the last nine renewals of the Cheveley Park Stakes, and looks to have two excellent chances of winning it again this year in the form of Beautify and True Love. Of the two, I’d have to side with TRUE LOVE to come out on top.
Having never finished outside the top two in her five races to date, she had been on an upward curve until a below-par performance in the Phoenix Stakes last month. She had an excuse that day, with the vet finding her to be mildly lame, so I’m happy to forgive her for that performance (she did still finish runner-up, so it wasn’t exactly a poor effort!). Her other two efforts over this 6f trip saw her finish a close runner-up behind Gstaad, who went on to win Group 2 honours at Royal Ascot, before she recorded an easy victory in the Group 2 Railway Stakes in July.
Jockey Wayne Lordan has been booked for the ride, who has certainly stepped up in Ryan Moore’s absence – in the past two weeks, he’s had 11 runners for Aidan O’Brien, winning on five of them. I’d be confident True Love can get the better of her stablemate Beautify and the impressive Royal Fixation, and I’d make her my strongest win fancy for the day.
3:40 Newmarket – REAL GAIN (12/1 generally)
I’m taking a bit of a punt with my selection in the Cambridgeshire, as he’s only had one race in the past 13 months! However, I do feel that REAL GAIN has an excellent chance of putting in a big performance on Saturday, particular with that Goodwood reappearance hopefully blowing away the cobwebs.
His sole race this year came at Goodwood last month, where it did look like he was going to hold off the challengers at one point, before tiring in the final furlong. That was a huge effort, considering he was taking on rivals with considerably more race fitness on their side, and with that run under his belt, I fancy him to go extremely close on Saturday.
Ebt’s Guard finished just one length ahead of him at Goodwood, and he’s now 4lbs better off with that rival, whilst the current second favourite in here, Fifth Column, was a length behind the selection at Goodwood and is now 9lbs worse off with Real Gain this time around. With plenty of online bookies offering six places, Real Gain looks a fantastic each-way angle in the race, and gets my vote.
