Karthon produced another strong performance at Newcastle on Saturday 4th October when finishing a fine second over one mile four and a half furlongs.
Karthon broke nicely from stall 5 and was positioned towards the rear of the field by jockey P J McDonald. He travelled comfortably through the contest and made good headway two furlongs out when pushed along. He mounted a solid challenge along the rail and stayed on well to finish two and a quarter lengths behind the winner Free Pic, who was prominent throughout.
After the race, jockey P J McDonald gave us his verdict on the performance:
“Everything was lovely, nice and smooth. He jumped well , we got a nice position, he relaxed into it lovely and we were travelling lovely. We were always comfortable, even inside the final furlong and a half I thought we were going to come with one move and get them in the last furlong but he just flattened out. The winner just kept going and I just couldn’t find that extra kick I needed. Everything went to plan, everything was smooth and we just bumped into one that was too good for us on the day.”
Trainer Andrew Balding reported the following the race:
“Karthon seems fine after his run at Newcastle, it was a good effort in the circumstances and certainly an improvement on his last run. He’s well up to winning on the flat at this level but I think he could probably be a pretty useful hurdler, particularly in that juvenile division. We’ll think about giving him another run on the flat and then think about an appropriate jumping campaign for him. He’s fine after the Newcastle race.”
This was another highly encouraging effort from Karthon, suggesting that a breakthrough victory is not far away. He remains an exciting prospect for all involved and looks sure to provide plenty more enjoyment in the future, both on the Flat and, potentially, over jumps.
