An Eye-catching Run From Unknown Journey At Southwell – Race Report

Unknown Journey ran a very encouraging race in a first-time tongue tie, finishing a close sixth over 1 mile at Lingfield on the 4th November.

Unknown Journey was sent off at 18/1 against eleven rivals. He broke alertly from stall six and settled well under jockey Charles Bishop, who found some nice cover in a midfield position. The pair travelled well to the two furlong pole where the tempo increased and Unknown Journey became slightly outpaced. He was a little short of room in a busy finish but rallied very well and finished strongly, only beaten three lengths by the eventual winner Arthur Rose.

After the race, jockey Charles Bishop gave us his verdict on the performance:

“We were about three quarters of the way back, lots of cover. Got him to relax, switch off and rode him to hit the line really strongly . Hopefully if he is picking up a bit of confidence he could run past them all one day.”

Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following morning:

“Yesterday’s performance from Unknown Journey was very good. We are very pleased with him, the jockey did what he was told and the draw helped us. He just tucked him in nicely, travelled round really nicely and finished the race well. He’s only been beaten a couple of heads for third and wasn’t very far from the winner. It was a much better performance, he’s fine this morning. He just wants a bit of confidence and when he gets it all right we’ll have a lot of fun.”

This was a highly encouraging run from Unknown Journey, who finished strongly and wasn’t beaten far at all. The performance suggests he has plenty more to offer and should be very competitive over the winter in similar races, providing lots of enjoyable days out for his owners to look forward to.
