Unknown Journey once again showed promise in defeat, this time at Newcastle on Thursday 27th November over seven furlongs.
Unknown Journey was sent off at 9/1 against twelve rivals. He broke well and settled into a good rhythm under jockey Molly Gunn who managed to find the ideal cover early on. Travelling strongly throughout, he moved into the race smoothly and tracked the leaders with plenty in hand. He was one of the last to come off the bridle and looked poised to challenge, but a lack of room around the one-furlong marker halted his momentum, after which he weakened to finish ninth.
After the race, jockey Molly Gunn gave us her verdict on the performance:
“He’s pinged the gates, like a rocket out of there! He travelled really well in behind. He just plugged on, I thought he was a bit reluctant to pass horses initially because he travelled so well and when the question was asked he just had a think. Maybe he needs cheekpieces to give him some help.”
Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following morning:
“Unknown Journey is back home and fine after the race. I don’t personally think the track suited him. Molly gave him a good ride, got him nicely covered up and he travelled very well just in behind the leaders. He got slightly hampered when he looked to be coming with a run, it just stopped his momentum and he would’ve finished a bit closer if that hadn’t have happened. He might need some cheekpieces on him and a step up in trip will help.”
Once again, Unknown Journey has shown ability, and with a more suitable track, trip, and perhaps a bit of headgear, he looks well capable of bouncing back to form. We look forward to seeing him back in action soon.
