Cheltenham’s December Meeting takes centre stage this week alongside a number of other good cards to enjoy. After landing a winner with Lulamba last week, we hope the form can continue.
3:00 Cheltenham – CONMAN JOHN (7/4 generally)
There are plenty of potential improvers in here, namely They Call Me Hugo, Carlenrig and Reckless Spending, yet the clear standard is set by CONMAN JOHN. Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore’s gelding is two from two over hurdles, kicking off at Kelso with a hammering of the Skelton’s Great Fleet who has since won a decent race there by two lengths. He confirmed form with that rival over course and distance in October, winning comfortably by three lengths. He still showed signs of greenness that day and hung left but galloped strongly to the line. I think he still has some progression to come and expect it will take a good effort to pass him.
6:00 Wolverhampton – MAGIC RUNNER (7/2 generally)
MAGIC RUNNER had been knocking on the door for a while and finally got a deserved victory over course and distance on the first of the month. It was a hugely impressive performance as the only horse to emerge from the trailing pack following a pace collapse. She finished very strongly and swept passed her rivals with ease, suggesting that a 3lb rise is definitely manageable. She has a fantastic attitude and should give a good account of herself despite another difficult draw, which didn’t faze her last time.
