Unknown Journey delivered a disappointing performance at the Surrey track on Monday 15th December.
He was relatively weak in the betting and went off at 22/1 against twelve rivals. Breaking very sharply from stall eight, he briefly led before taking up a prominent position just behind the leaders. However, he failed to settle and raced keenly throughout. Turning into the straight, when William Carson asked him to quicken around two furlongs out, he was unable to find much, perhaps paying the price for racing too freely in the early stages. He weakened to finish ninth, with the winner, Tommy’s Promise, producing an eye-catching run to win.
After the race, jockey William Carson gave us his verdict on the performance:
“I have asked him to jump out of the gates to get a good position and he’s run a little bit too free with me. I settled in behind the pace and as they slowed he got keener and keener. He would win over a mile , he jumps and he travels but he just does too much, he was pulling all the way and did too much damage early. He can’t finish because he has spent his energy. I think come back to a mile and we’ll see the best of him.”
Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following day:
“He travelled very well but just didn’t see out his race. He has come out of the race well. We will come back to the mile and have him ridden patiently again and we should get there in the end, I am pretty confident we will. There will be lots of races for him in January.”
Once again, Unknown Journey showed ability but, unfortunately, raced too freely and was unable to feature at the business end. He remains a horse capable of giving his owners some good days at the races and, when things fall right for him, can be competitive in his grade.
