Magic Runner delivered another honest performance in a higher grade over a trip that didn’t quite suit on Monday 16th February.
Sent off at 10/3 in a field of seven, Magic Runner broke smartly from stall two and was positioned towards the rear by Taryn Langley, racing quite keenly as she often does through the early stages.The pace was steady and the field remained tightly bunched throughout, with just five lengths covering first to last. She passed a rival at the end of the back straight and, as the tempo lifted turning for home just over two furlongs out, she found herself a little too far back and was forced to challenge wide. Staying on well, she was beaten only two lengths, performing well in a slowly run race over a furlong short of her optimum trip.
After the race, jockey Taryn Langley gave us her verdict on the performance:
“She has run very well again. I just felt that rounding the top bend we were in top gear and could have done with the extra furlong we usually have. She runs on her merit every time. She got into a nice rhythm, but there was a bit of a bunch in front of us out of the stalls so I pulled back. There are not many races that suit her at the minute. She’s in good form and we can go again.”
Trainer Ruth Carr reported the following morning :
“Magic Runner is fine this morning. It was a good run considering the trip was too short and Taryn felt she was in top gear for most of the way. She got shuffled back further than was ideal off a slow pace. She stayed on nicely to the line and was not disgraced in any way in a higher grade. There’s no reason not to go again soon.”
Once again, Magic Runner produced a determined and genuine performance in a race that didn’t play to her strengths. As Ruth and Taryn said, she remains in great spirits and we can look forward to seeing her back on the racecourse again soon.
