Wednesday 8th July Round-Up

We had two runners in action last week, with Brodie’s Boy and Denby’s Dream lining up at Kempton and Chepstow. Both arrived in good form, looking to build on encouraging recent performances.

After catching the eye when finishing fourth in the Racing Club-sponsored contest at Newbury in June, Brodie’s Boy was unable to build on that effort on his next start at Kempton. Ridden prominently by Charlie Tucker, our gelding raced in a share of second through the early stages of what was a steadily run contest. As expected, the race became a sprint and when the pace lifted approaching the two-furlong marker, Brodie’s Boy was unable to match the change of gear shown by some of his rivals. He was soon outpaced and came home in seventh.

After the race, trainer Tony Carroll gave us his verdict on the performance:

“It was obviously disappointing. It was a very slowly run race, they walked round and sprinted up the straight. He just got out-sprinted to be honest. He is absolutely fine this morning.”

After a pair of encouraging runner-up finishes and an unlucky passage at Bath on her previous start, Denby’s Dream deservedly got her head in front at Brighton on the final day of June. Unfortunately, she was unable to build on that success in the 19:36 at Chepstow on her next start. Breaking smartly from stall four under Harry Vigors, she raced far too keenly in the early stages and soon opened up a four-length advantage by halfway. However, having gone such a strong gallop, she understandably tired inside the final furlong and weakened to finish sixth.

After the race, trainer Charlie Pike gave us his verdict on the performance:

“It was a bit frustrating, she has gone far too quick and Harry didn’t have much choice. With daylight ahead of her she just took off. She has run her race backwards, done too much too early and not had the legs to finish off. We will look to have her back out soon.”
