Unknown Journey Makes Pleasing Handicap Debut – Race Report

Unknown Journey made a pleasing return to action at Wolverhampton on Saturday 11th January, finishing fourth in his first run since November 2024.

Sent off as an 18/1 outsider for his handicap debut, Unknown Journey broke well out of the stalls and sat in mid-division close to the rail during the early stages. He remained there up until the final two furlongs, where he was just short of room going around the final bend, causing jockey Eddie Greatrex to pull him out wide to find room to run into. Having lost momentum, he failed to go with those in front of him, but did manage to stay on well in the final stages to finish fourth.

After the race, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave us his summary:

“I thought he jumped out of the stalls well and they went a good gallop. He stuck to his task really well but just as we got into the straight another horse came across him, forcing me to pull him back, which cost us some crucial momentum. I certainly feel he’s got a win in him at this level, and he may suit stepping up in trip in the future.”

Trainer Paul Attwater reported the following morning:

“He had a bit of a bumpy ride and they didn’t hang about, which didn’t suit him, but I felt he ran well and deserved plenty of credit for his effort. He’s come out of the race well, ate up his breakfast and trotted out sound, and I’m looking forward to his next run now with that run under his belt.”

This was a pleasing handicap debut from Unknown Journey, and he looks sure to improve for the run – fingers crossed for a fruitful 2025 campaign!
