Wendigo Runs Out Easy Winner In Prep Race For Cheltenham – Race Report

Wendigo further cemented his credentials for the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle with an effortless victory at Wetherby on Wednesday 12th February.

With his chief danger South Omo Zone pulled out of the race due to unsuitable ground, Wendigo was sent off as a heavy odds-on favourite and performed just as you would expect a 1/11 shot to run. Having made all of the running, jockey Gavin Sheehan asked him to quicken clear with three hurdles left to jump, and he duly obliged, pulling clear of his rivals with relative ease. After clearing the final hurdle, he was eased down to win by 7½ lengths, giving his owners plenty to get excited about as he heads to the Cheltenham Festival next month.

After the race, jockey Gavin Sheehan gave us his verdict on the performance:

“He felt a million dollars out there today. He’s pricking his ears throughout the race and was clearly enjoying himself out there. As soon as we turned into the home straight, he quickened up and did it easily in the end. His jumping was brilliant throughout and we couldn’t have any more of him in that race. All roads lead to Cheltenham now!”

Trainer Jamie Snowden reported the following morning:

“I’m delighted to say that Wendigo has trotted out sound and well this morning. We’ll give him an easier week on the back of that, and all being well we have three weeks to get him ready for the Albert Bartlett now. He’s the shortest price of the English runners in the race and he deserves to be, and I can’t wait to see how he gets on in the race. Delighted with the performance yesterday, and the dream is well and truly alive for a Cheltenham Festival winner with Wendigo!”
