Rory’s Gold made a promising turf debut at Newbury on Friday, running well before being outpaced during the final stages of the race to eventually finish ninth.
With the ground better than ideal for Rory to make his debut on turf, he took a keen hold in the early stages of the race and was prominent throughout the first mile of the race. With just over two furlongs to go, he failed to keep up with some of his rivals who appreciated the firmer ground and once his chances of winning had faded, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave him an easier time of things, eventually finishing in ninth place, just over 13 lengths behind the winner.
After the race, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave us his verdict on the performance:
“I was pleased with the performance. He was good and quick out of the stalls, and I didn’t want to fight with him, so I just let him go off in front. He didn’t appreciate the ground today but he’s definitely a capable horse on his day and everything will hopefully click with him soon enough.”
Assistant Trainer Charlie Pike reported the following morning:
“Rory has trotted out sound and well this morning, and has ate up his breakfast, so he’s none the worse for the run. It was a bit of a learning experience for him, and I think moving forward we will likely drop him back in trip to a mile. Long term I do feel a mile and a quarter will be his optimum trip, but he’s just not quite ready for that yet.”
We look forward to seeing him back in action soon, and fingers crossed the drop back in trip will see him to better effect next time out!
