Blackwaterfoot put in a fantastic performance on turf debut to run out a winner at Ffos Las on Wednesday 16th July, giving his owners plenty to be excited about for his future in the process.
With three of the original runners withdrawing from the race, Blackwaterfoot lined up against just the four rivals on Wednesday evening, where he was sent off as an 11/2 shot. Having broke out of the stalls well, jockey Eddie Greatrex settled him towards the rear and allowed him to get into a rhythm, sitting a couple of lengths behind the opposition. With two furlongs to go, Eddie asked him for his effort, and he duly obliged, making good headway and battling for the lead in the final furlong. Staying on strongly, he got his head in front when it mattered to win, finishing a neck ahead of the runner-up Racing Demon.
After the race, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave us his verdict on the performance:
“I’m absolutely delighted with him. The plan was to just take my time with him, and he travelled really sweet throughout the race, just lightly off the bridle. Once we hit the three-furlong marker, I knew we had a bit of work to do, but I also knew he would knuckle down and finish the race well, and that’s exactly what he did. He loved the ground and he’s going to be a really fun horse.”
Trainer Paul Attwater reported the following morning:
“I was over the moon with that performance, and it’s great to see he’s shown on the racecourse what he has been showing us at home. I feel the performance can be upgraded slightly, considering he sat towards the rear of the field throughout, which bodes well for the future with him. I’m pleased to say he’s trotted up sound and well and ate up his dinner last night, so that’s great news.”
This was a thoroughly likeable performance from Blackwaterfoot, who showed tenacity, a good attitude, and a strong finishing kick to get off the mark on his first start on turf. With plenty of improvement still to come and signs he could appreciate a step up in trip, there’s every reason to be excited about what lies ahead for this promising gelding.
