Following three underwhelming efforts in novice races, Bosh Soldier delivered a better performance on Monday 15th December in the Nursery Handicap over 1m 1½f.
Bosh Soldier was sent off at 25/1 against eight rivals. Slightly slowly away, she was pushed along early by Grace McEntee to get into stride. She raced a little keenly—understandable after an extended absence—and settled just worse than midfield. As the pace lifted, she was ridden along to make her challenge but appeared to be outpaced and possibly tiring, which could be expected given her time off the track. She was ultimately beaten just five lengths, and the run suggested that a mile or further is likely to suit her best, with every indication that she is capable of holding her own in nursery company.
After the race, jockey Grace McEntee gave us her verdict on the performance:
“I was pleased with Bosh Soldier’s effort there. She was a touch slow but I was able to get her tucked in and she travelled round well. Turning in she was finding but she didn’t quite have that turn of foot , she stayed galloping and I wouldn’t be afraid to step her up to a mile and a quarter. It was a much improved effort and she’ll come on a lot from that mentally and physically.”
Trainer George Boughey reported the following morning :
“Bosh Soldier has come out of her run in good shape, she has eaten up and is moving fine. It was a notable step forward. She was still green as we had thought but she applied herself well.”
It was really pleasing to see Bosh Soldier back on the racecourse, where she ran a solid race that she is sure to improve on. Her owners enjoyed a great evening and look set for more to come in the near future.
