Brodie’s Boy showed an admirable attitude to secure a podium finish at the Nottinghamshire venue on the 3rd January.
Sent off at 9/1 in a field of ten, he broke well from stall 6 under Jason Watson, who rousted him along early to take up a prominent position. Racing a little keenly, he gradually worked his way into a share of the lead, and Jason allowed him to stride on as the field swung into the straight three furlongs from home. Stablemate Tortured Soul caught the eye travelling strongly throughout and, showing a smart turn of foot, moved to the front before staying on well to score. Brodie’s Boy battled gamely in behind to finish third, beaten three and three-quarter lengths.
After the race, jockey Jason Watson gave us his verdict on the performance:
“It looked like he was overdoing it but it was because we were going so slow. If we were going a normal gallop he wouldn’t have. Around the bend, I tried to nick a few lengths but when we got to the front he was almost looking around waiting for horses to get to him. I would bring him back to a mile and two furlongs with blinkers on, he needs that concentration in the finish.”
Trainer Tony Carroll reported following the race :
“I was very pleased with him, he ran very well in what was a very muddling race. Jason gave him a nice ride and he put that poor Lingfield performance behind him. The race really wasn’t run to suit him. He has come out of it very well and I will be looking to carry on soon.”
This was a really pleasing effort from Brodie’s Boy in a race that wasn’t run to suit him, and we’re looking forward to seeing him back on the racecourse in the coming weeks.
