Unknown Journey ran a very encouraging race to finish third on 29th January, showing significant progress from his recent outings.
Sent off at 12/1 in a field of nine, Unknown Journey broke sharply from the widest stall and was soon settled into a handy second under Jack Doughty, racing on the outside of the leader. He travelled strongly throughout and responded well when asked to quicken two furlongs out as the field turned for home. He briefly took the lead before being headed by stablemate Volendom and eventual winner Poke The Bear, but he kept on gamely to the line to secure third place, finishing a length and three quarters clear of the remainder.
After the race, jockey Jack Doughty gave us his verdict on the performance:
“He broke very quickly, there was a lot of pace and he really relaxed in behind the leader. I probably got there a bit too early down the hill and rode him under hands and heels to get him to quicken. As the winner and the second got to him he went again and finished well so it was an encouraging run. If he can relax again, he has a bit of confidence for next time.”
Trainer Tony Carroll reported after the race:
“He ran well, he settled nicely in that different bit that we put on him so I was pleased with that. Jack gave him a lovely ride, I think he could have been second with a better draw but he wouldn’t have beaten the winner today. I would definitely come back here, he likes the track, the trip is perfect and he’ll win his race when the time comes.”
This was a really pleasing effort from Unknown Journey, and hopefully he can build on it next time. His owners enjoyed a great day at Lingfield and can look forward to another in the near future.
