Our first runner of the new year didn’t enjoy the clearest of passages in the final race at Wolverhampton on the 2nd January, but kept on well to finish a close-up sixth.
Sent off at 10/1 in a field of ten, Magic Runner broke well from the inside stall and James Sullivan was able to settle her in a share of fourth. She was shuffled back into fifth down the back straight and was ridden along three furlongs from home as Time Turner quickened approaching the home turn and the tempo increased. Our filly remained in touch with the leaders, but was short of room just over a furlong out and had her momentum checked at a crucial stage. She picked up again and battled on gamely to finish sixth, beaten just three and a quarter lengths in total, with Latin coming out on top.
After the race, jockey James Sullivan gave us his verdict on the performance:
“She was unlucky, as we turned in the two in front came together and we didn’t have anywhere to go. She didn’t get out until late on and stayed on. She’s still in good form and that won’t have taken too much out of her.”
Trainer Ruth Carr reported the following morning :
“Magic Runner is fine after the race last night. They didn’t really go fast enough and she didn’t have a lot of luck up the straight. She won’t have had a hard race so we’ll see what’s coming up for her. ”
Magic Runner ran another creditable race and, with a bit more luck, looked likely to have played a major role in the finish. Once again, her brilliant owners enjoyed a great day on course, and there should be plenty more to look forward to in the near future.
