A Frustrating Evening For RC Duo At Wolverhampton – Race Reports

It was a case of two frustrating performances at Wolverhampton on Monday evening, with both Unknown Journey and Lightningboltzoom failing to perform at their usual level.

First up, Unknown Journey was sent off as the outsider in a four-runner race, with trainer Paul Attwater opting to put him in first-time blinkers. Having ducked right out of the stalls, jockey Eddie Greatrex took him into the lead, where he stayed for the majority of the race. With three furlongs to go, Eddie asked him for his effort, but he failed to kick on, allowing the favourite Patrol and second favourite Sydney Whistler to pass him in the straight. He eventually finished third, six-and-a-half lengths off the winner.

Lightningboltzoom then put in an uncharacteristically disappointing performance, finishing a well-beaten sixth of seven. Having started well and taken an early lead, he failed to kick on and weakened quickly in the run-in. Jockey Eddie Greatrex reported he stopped quickly in the final couple of furlongs, and having checked the horse after the race, trainer Paul Attwater found him to be lame behind, which certainly explains the effort.

After the race, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave us his summary on both rides:

“Both performances were really frustrating. Unknown Journey was travelling well throughout the race but as soon as the winner came upside him, he couldn’t go with him. Lightningboltzoom seemed to have something amiss as that performance was not up to his usual standard. I’m sure the team will determine exactly what was wrong with him, and hopefully he’ll be back to his best next time.”

Trainer Paul Attwater reported the following morning:

“I was a bit disappointed with both runs last night. This morning we’ve been brainstorming for other options for Unknown Journey – we actually took him to the schooling grounds at the top of Lambourn and popped him over a few poles and hurdles. He went extremely well and I was really pleased with him, so that’s certainly one option for him! Lightningboltzoom was lame behind, which explains his performance. He’s absolutely fine in himself but is sore, so we’ll have the vet come in to look at him and give him time to recover.”
