Blackwaterfoot + Brodie’s Boy In Action At Wolverhampton – Race Reports

With over fifty Racing Club owners in attendance, Racing Club duo Blackwaterfoot and Brodie’s Boy both finished seventh in their respective races at Wolverhampton on Tuesday 11th February.

First up, Blackwaterfoot made his eagerly-awaited return to action in the opener, having been off the racecourse for over five months. Having been off for so long and in just his second race, expectations were set fairly low and he ran well through the majority of the race, before tiring in the final stages to finish a respectable seventh. He is sure to come on for the run, and we can’t wait to see how his season progresses now with this second run under his belt.

After the race, jockey David Probert gave us his summary on the ride:

“I was really happy with how he performed. He moved really well coming around the bend and he moves nicely – he did find things a little bit tough in the business end of the race, but that was to be expected having been off for so long. He’s a nice and exciting horse going forward, he gave me a nice feel and I think he has a promising future ahead.”

The final race on the card saw Brodie’s Boy in action, who was drawn wider than ideal out in stall 7. Due to this, he had to race wide in the early stages, but was up with the pace though the majority of the race. He started to make headway around three furlongs out, but he weakened to eventually finish seventh. Interestingly, the first four horses home were drawn in stalls 1-4, so it’s clear he did have his work cut from stall 7.

After the race, jockey Kieran O’Neill gave us his verdict on the performance:

“It was a bit disappointing. They’ve gone a nice gallop early, and I was forced to race wider than I wanted, which wasn’t ideal. The race didn’t run to suit Brodie’s, with the race turning into a bit of a dash in the final three furlongs. I think he’ll be better suited to a track with a longer straight, somewhere like Kempton on Newcastle. The ability is definitely there with him, I just don’t think this race suited him tonight.”

Assistant Trainer Charlie Pike reported the following morning:

“I’m pleased to report both horses have come out of their races fine, with both trotting up sound this morning and eating all their breakfast up. I think it was a promising return to action from Blackwaterfoot and we can look forward to the season ahead with him. Regarding Brodie’s Boy, we’ll take the advice from Kieran O’Neill on board and look for a course with a stiffer finish for him next time out, which hopefully will see him in a better light.”
