Blackwaterfoot put in another promising performance, despite finishing towards the rear of the field at Southwell on Easter Sunday. This was his third career run, meaning he will now get a handicap mark and race against a similar level of competition.
In what looked a tough Novice race for him, particularly giving weight away to some promising newcomers, Blackwaterfoot was sent off as a 100/1 outsider. Having broken best out of the stalls, jockey William Cox got him into a good rhythm and settled him in midfield, just behind the odds-on favourite Nebras. The race was run at a slow pace, which didn’t suit our runner, and he eventually weakened to finish seventh. This was another race where he would’ve learned plenty for the experience, and we look forward to seeing him in action in handicap races moving forwards.
After the race, jockey William Cox gave us his verdict on the performance:
“I was happy enough with his performance there. He broke out of the stalls well, but the race wasn’t run to suit him at all, with the race turning into a bit of a sprint in the final stages. I’ve no doubt that we’ll see him to much better effect now he can go handicapping.”
Assistant Trainer Charlie Pike reported the following day:
“I was pleased with the performance, in what was a hot field. He’s still learning on the job and he’ll get his handicap mark now, which should help him be much more competitive moving forward. He’s come out of the race in good order, and I’m looking forward to seeing him back in action again soon.”
Blackwaterfoot will receive his opening handicap mark next week (Tuesday 29th April). Once we know his handicap mark, trainer Paul Attwater will look into possible handicap race options for him – we can’t wait to see him back out in action again soon!
