Blue Sky Boy put in a career-best performance as he stepped up in trip to finish third at Wolverhampton on Tuesday 7th December, in what was a highly encouraging performance.
The Newlands team decided to step Blue Sky Boy markedly up in trip for this 1-mile 6-furlong race, and it certainly seemed to be the right move. Having been well-backed before the off, he was sent off as a 9/2 shot, having been a double-figure price in the morning. Drawn wide in stall 8, jockey Eddie Greatrex opted to keep him wide and away from the other runners, before coming across to lead the read of the field. After setting the pace throughout the race, Dark Mystery began to challenge him for the lead going round the final turn, but with both battling it left Alfheim the chance to sweep down the outside to win a thrilling finish. Dark Mystery finished a neck behind the winner, with Blue Sky Boy a further ½ length behind in third.
After the race, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave us his summary:
“I was pleased with his performance there, he just loves to gallop. I think stepping up in trip again could suit him, at a nice galloping track like Kempton. Every aspect of him is very straightforward, and I think he’s off a winnable mark – it’s just a case of finding the right race for him.”
Trainer Paul Attwater reported the following morning:
“The whole team were delighted with his effort last night. The race went to plan as far as we were concerned, it was just a case that we set it up for a couple of strong finishers. We may look to step him up again in trip to two miles, but we’ll sit down as a team and decide that over the coming days. It was certainly a step in the right direction for Blue Sky.”
This was a much-improved performance from Blue Sky Boy and he certainly seems to have taken a liking to staying trips – a bright start to 2025 and fingers crossed he’ll be in the winners’ enclosure soon!
