Brodie’s Boy put in a frustrating performance at Kempton on Tuesday 15th April, finishing in ninth place and failing to muster any real challenge to get into the race.
Having been sent off as a 14/1 outsider for the race, we remained hopeful of a good performance, returning to the scene of his previous C&D win off the same mark. Having broken well out of the stalls, it took Brodie’s a while to get into a good rhythm, with jockey Eddie Greatrex having to settle him towards the rear of the field. The race was run at a strong pace throughout, which wasn’t ideal considering Brodie’s was some way behind the front runners. He never really managed to get into the race, eventually finishing a well-beaten ninth, just over twelve lengths off the winner Federated.
After the race, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave us his verdict on the performance:
“He was just a bit slow away and they went hard early. I let him find his feet and he travelled through the race really well, but the race just wasn’t really run to suit. This is the right trip for him and he’s becoming well handicapped now, so it’s only a matter of time before he gets a win, and I think he’ll go on a bit of a run then.”
Trainer Paul Attwater reported the following morning:
“I was a little bit disappointed with the run – he got a bit detached from the pace setters and left himself too much to do at the end. We’ll look to get him back out in the next few weeks, with plenty of options for him now the turf season is underway.”
Brodie’s Boy is likely to drop further in the handicap ratings now and is starting to look extremely well handicapped, so we’re optimistic it won’t be long until we see some much-improved performance – hopefully, he’ll be back in the winners’ enclosure soon!
