Dunstan Continues His Excellent Form At Wolverhampton – Race Report 08/04/24

Dunstan with connections after finishing runner-up at Wolverhampton on Monday 8th April.

Dunstan took the step up in class in his stride at Wolverhampton on Monday evening to finish a close runner-up to a talented rival, showing further proof he is on a horse firmly on the upgrade.

Having won each of his four previous races since joining Racing Club, Dunstan was stepped up to class 3 company for the first time and despite only having four rivals in the race, he was taking on some talented opposition. Sent off as an 8/1 shot, he took a keen hold early on, with Kieran O’Neill holding him up towards the rear. The race was run at a steady tempo, and despite being further back than hoped, Kieran kept him within reach of the front-running Per Contra throughout. When asked for his effort in the final couple of furlongs, he did have to contest with a bit of traffic in front of him, but when in the clear he flew home, catching the eventual winner Per Contra with every stride. He eventually finished just half a length off the winner, which was some effort considering he had virtually made all and Dunstan was held up at the rear of the field.

You can watch the final stages of the race below:

Jockey Kieran O’Neill said after the race:

“He was a bit keen in the opening stages, but he got settled into a nice rhythm soon enough, although we were slightly further back than I had planned to be. We had to wait for a gap to appear, and once it did he quickened up nicely and was closing all the way to the line. He seems to be getting better and he’s still improving – we’re sure to have a lot of fun with him. You could even step him up in trip in a better race I think.”

The morning after the race, trainer Barry Brennan reported:

“He’s come out of the race well and tucked straight into his evening meal last night. He ate up everything, walked out and trotted up nicely with a glint in his eye and a spring in his step! He will have a couple of easy days now but I’m absolutely delighted with the performance, he’s a true professional.”

We couldn’t be happier with how Dunstan is progressing and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for him!
