Farceur Du Large Completes Military Gold Cup Double – Race Report 15/02/24

Farceur Du Large completed a memorable Military Gold Cup double on Thursday 15th February, by winning the Royal Artillery Gold Cup in impressive style. Having already won the Grand Military Gold Cup last month, confidence was high in Racing Club HQ that he would be able to follow up in the Royal Artillery Gold Cup, and ‘Frank The Tank’ duly obliged!

With his first Gold Cup win coming just 20 days beforehand, we were hoping Farceur Du Large would head into the race with plenty of confidence and ready to put in another big performance. Sent off as 13/8 favourite, he got into a good rhythm in the early stages, settling in behind the front-running Fil D’Ariane. Aside from a slight peck on landing over fence 10, Major Will Kellard gave him a near-faultless ride yet again, and it wasn’t long until he put the pressure on Fil D’Ariane. A fall from the front-runner two out left FDL in the clear, and despite last year’s winner Broken Halo keeping on, he was never getting to terms with Farceur. Our superstar ended up winning by a total of six and a half lengths, in another dominant victory.

Trainer Jamie Snowden was delighted with the performance, stating after the race:

“It’s a joy, this race is very dear to me and there’s a lot of personal pride to do the double. I thought Will gave Farceur Du Large a lovely ride and getting up the inner at the pond fence was perfect. Will has done brilliantly on him and it’s great for the horse. He was a good horse in his younger days and while the wheels have slightly fallen off it’s good to be able to drop back into this kind of company and see him back on form.”

Jockey Major Will Kellard was equally ecstatic, saying:

“We’ve got the double – what a day! That was incredible, it was a different tempo to the previous race but he handled it well. As he came into the second circuit, he came up out of my hands and I knew I had a lot of horse left under me. He’s such a willing partner, and he really took off going up the hill.”
