Handlethekettle made a brilliant return to hurdles with a dominant front-running victory at Worcester on Wednesday 18th June, extending his record over hurdles to three wins from five starts — and giving us plenty to be excited about for the months ahead.
Sent off at 9/2 for his handicap debut over hurdles, he was quickly into stride, taking the lead from the start and never looking back. Despite a couple of slightly awkward jumps over the fourth and fifth flights, he travelled with real purpose and had his rivals on the ropes turning for home. From there, he powered clear to win by five lengths — an impressive effort, particularly as he was giving weight to both of the horses that finished remotely close to him.
After the race, jockey Gavin Sheehan gave us his verdict on the performance:
“That was a great effort from him, and he deserved the win. He did have a couple of questionable jumps, but he improved, and once he got into a rhythm he didn’t miss a beat. I think we’ll have a lot of fun with him over the next few months.”
Trainer Jamie Snowden reported the following morning:
“I was thrilled with the performance – Gav gave him a great ride and he certainly seemed to enjoy being back over hurdles. We won’t forget about going Novice Chasing in the future, but for now, I think we keep him over hurdles and see just how far he can take us.”
All in all, it was a hugely encouraging effort – and we can’t wait to see what Handlethekettle can do next as the season unfolds.
