Karthon put in a promising performance on his first start since joining Racing Club, finishing third at Chester on Saturday 26th July, giving owners plenty to be excited about for the future.
Sent off as 15/8 favourite, despite his wide draw in stall 10, trainer Andrew Balding was hopeful of a big performance from Karthon, and he got off to a perfect start, with jockey Jason Watson quick out of the stalls and into a handy position on the rails. After three furlongs, Animato pestered him for the lead, to which Jason was happy to concede, sitting Karthon in second place and once he asked him to quicken two furlongs out, he duly obliged and took over the lead again. However, in the final furlong he was headed by two rivals and failed to go with them, eventually finishing third of the ten runners.
After the race, jockey Jason Watson gave us his verdict on the performance:
“He jumped well from the stalls, and I was happy to let him go forward — in fact, he got there quite easily. We were then pestered for the lead, so I was content to let the other horse go on, but the pace in front wasn’t particularly strong. He travelled nicely through the race, and I had to switch him to the outside to go past the leader, which he did comfortably. After that, everything just seemed to happen very quickly around us, and he couldn’t quite go with the two that pulled clear. That said, I think he’s more than capable of winning a race of this nature in the future.”
Trainer Andrew Balding reported the following morning:
“I was pleased with the performance, and I do feel he could potentially stay even further in the future, so that’s something to consider. We’ll wait and see how the handicapper reacts to the performance before making any plans going forward, but I’m looking forward to seeing him back in action again soon.”
This was a great start to live with us, and in the capable hands of Andrew Balding, we cannot wait to see what the future holds for Karthon!
