After delivering a nice double over the jumps last weekend, our Insider is looking to continue the good form. We have a fantastic afternoon of racing to enjoy, including British Champions Day bringing together elite horses, jockeys, and trainers for a showcase of top-class racing. As the richest raceday in Britain, it offers over £4 million in prize money and plenty of punting opportunities.
2:45 Ascot – WAARDAH (13/2 generally)
Kalpana won this last year and sets a high standard with a rating of 122. She is the clear pick on form. However, her recent run in the Arc might have taken the edge off her and she hasn’t been hugely convincing to my eyes this season. The filly in here who has impressed me most is WAARDAH and she is suggested as an each way bet. She has won her last two starts , over trips of 1m 2f and 1m 6f. She showed an impressive turn of foot to win in a sprint finish at Goodwood in June and stays further than today’s trip. She has the ability to cope with however the race is run and likely has further improvement to come with only five career starts to date.
3:25 Ascot – FIELD OF GOLD (2/1 generally)
The Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes is always an exceptional contest and this year is certainly no different. Rosallion is a hugely admirable performer who would be a deserving winner after losing out in agonising fashion in the Queen Anne in June. However, the one they all have to beat is the striking Kingman colt FIELD OF GOLD. He was stunning here as he landed the St James’s Palace by three and a half lengths and can be forgiven his latest run at Goodwood where he showed up lame afterwards and had several excuses. He has been given plenty of time since and should be arriving here fresh. He is well clear on ratings after some exceptional performances this season and should take plenty of beating.
