Racing Club Insider Tips – Saturday 7th February

Another enjoyable day of racing awaits, with plenty to look forward to at Warwick and Newbury. Let’s hope we can keep the momentum going after last week’s winner at Leopardstown.

12:40 Warwick – JUST GOLDEN (13/8 Generally)

The opening race at Warwick, a 2m3f maiden hurdle, looks like a good opportunity for the Skeltons’ six-year-old Just Golden to get off the mark over jumps. His bumper win on soft ground at Chepstow provides hope he will be comfortable with underfoot conditions.

He shaped well when third in a warm Class 2 at Newcastle on his second hurdle start, finishing ahead of a couple of next-time-out winners, and took another step forward last time when second in the same grade at Cheltenham. This drop in class could be just what he needs to get his head in front on his fourth start over obstacles and he looks the one to beat.

The main danger appears to be Piping Rock, who has clear ability and should be winning races before long.

15:20 Newbury – MILLDAM (16/1 Generally Each Way)

This looks the trickiest race on the card and a real puzzle for punters, with several holding solid chances. The Skelton-trained Let It Rain has clearly been aimed at this, looks well handicapped, travels strongly and handles soft ground. She has plenty in her favour and is one I will have a small win bet on. Hot Fuss is another worth a mention. My main recommendation, though, is MILLDAM.

The eight-year-old grey is not as well treated as some, but he is only 2lb above his last winning mark and showed signs of a return to form at Windsor on a track that did not really suit. He is happiest racing prominently, which could be a major advantage in very testing conditions where horses could struggle to make up ground. He has the services of Isabelle Ryder who is excellent value for her claim, having already ridden seven winners for Jamie Snowden this season.

The key factor, though, is the ground. Milldam is at his very best when conditions are close to unraceable, which is exactly what he will face here. His last four runs on heavy ground have all resulted in wins, and he looks the type to keep battling when others have thrown in the towel. With five places on offer, he looks a decent each way play.
