Spirit Of Summer Wins Impressively On Seasonal Reappearance – Race Report

In what was his first race since joining Racing Club, Spirit Of Summer put in an impressive performance to win at Southwell on Wednesday 19th March, giving his owners plenty to be excited about for the year ahead.

Having last been seen in a group 1 race in France last year, Spirit Of Summer was well fancied to make a winning return to action on Wednesday and duly obliged! Having broken well out of the stalls, jockey Oisin Murphy kept Spirit in midfield during the early stages of the race, getting him into a nice rhythm. Once they hit the straight, Oisin asked him for his effort and he made smooth headway past the leaders, and once he got his head in front there was only ever going to be one winner. He pulled clear from his rivals in the dying stages to finish over two lengths ahead of the runner-up Bowen Island, in what was a classy performance all around.

After the race, jockey Oisin Murphy gave us his verdict on the performance:

“That was nice and straightforward from Spirit Of Summer. There was a bit of speed during the early stages but I didn’t want to rush him and he relaxed just in behind the front runners. He gave me a good feeling once we hit the straight and I just had to make him get the job done. Overall it was a very pleasing performance.”

Trainer Andrew Balding reported the following morning:

“It was a great performance and I’m delighted with the manner he won the race, pulling clear from his rivals in the latter stages. It was a great start to the season for him and I look forward to watching him progress further throughout the year.”

This was the perfect start to the season for Spirit Of Summer, and with this run under his belt, we cannot wait to see how his season progresses – exciting times ahead!
