Unknown Journey made a pleasing stable debut for new trainer Tony Carroll, staying on strongly to finish fourth at Goodwood on Friday 6th June.
Sent off as a 16/1 shot, Unknown Journey came into the race as a bit of an outsider, as he took a marked drop down in trip for his first start under Tony Carroll. Jockey Alexandra McDonnell tucked Unknown Journey out towards the rear of the field for the majority of the race, but he stayed on strongly in the final stages to pick off his rivals, eventually finishing fourth. Aside from the favourite Mahra’s Love, who finished third, he did best of those to be held up towards the rear in the race.
After the race, jockey Alexandra McDonnell gave us her verdict on the performance:
“I was really pleased with the performance. He’s a very honest horse – when I asked him for his effort, he went and stayed on really well in the final stages. I think if we step him up in trip next time, he will go even closer next time and I’d be excited about his future moving forward.”
Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following morning:
“That was a great performance, I was really pleased with him. The way he stayed on well just proves to me we’ll see him to better effect once we step him back up in trip, and this was all about getting a race back into him and seeing where we stand with him. He’s come out of the race absolutely fine and has eaten up all his food since, which is further good news. I’m delighted Racing Club have given me the opportunity to train him and I’m hopeful we will find a winning opportunity for him soon.”
This was a hugely encouraging performance from Unknown Journey over a trip that was likely shorter than ideal. With Tony Carroll now working his magic, we’re excited to see how much more improvement is to come — and fingers crossed he can go even closer next time out!
