Unknown Journey Frustrates At Leicester – Race Report

Unknown Journey put in an underwhelming performance at Leicester on Wednesday evening, finishing sixth and leaving his trainer scratching his head as to what didn’t go to plan.

With trainer Tony Carroll optimistic of a top three finish and having been well supported in the betting, we were hopeful of a big performance from Unknown Journey, despite his being drawn widest of all in stall 9. Having taken a keen hold in the early stages of the race, he had to race wide throughout and perhaps used up too much of his energy in trying to get into a prominent position. Once reaching the home straight, he failed to keep up with his rivals when asked for his final effort, to eventually finish sixth of the nine runners.

After the race, jockey Jack Doughty gave us his verdict on the performance:

“I tried to get him in a prominent position, but that wasn’t easy from his draw, and we had to stay out wider than ideal. I gave him time to pick up in the straight, but he was always doing too much early and didn’t have enough to give at the end. The race just wasn’t run to suit him and I’m sure we’ll see him to better effect next time out.”

Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following morning:

“It was a frustrating performance last night. He raced wider than ideal, but certainly didn’t run his race the way I was expecting him to. He’s absolutely fine this morning, but I do have a vet coming in next week, so I’ll have him checked over just to see if there is any issue with him.”

It was a strange performance from Unknown Journey last night, but we have no doubt that Tony will get him back to his best in no time, and we look forward to seeing him out again soon.
