Wendigo put in an excellent performance on his hurdles debut at Hexham on Saturday, finishing runner-up and pulling well clear of the remainder.
Sent off as the 6/5 favourite for the race, Wendigo raced prominently and jumped well throughout the early stages of the race. For his first hurdles start, you couldn’t help but be impressed by his jumping, and he looked well in contention as the pace started to quicken. He pulled clear with the front-runner Battle Born Lad, but just failed to get past him in the dying stages. He eventually finished a length behind the winner, but did finish a huge 17 lengths clear of the third-placed She’s Notjoeking, in what was a hugely promising hurdles debut.
The morning after the race, trainer Jamie Snowden reported:
I was thrilled with his performance, he’s done everything and he’s just been beaten in a close finish by a sharper rival on the day. We know he’s going to improve when stepping up in trip and when we get softer ground, so I’m really excited to see him progress this season.”
It was a highly encouraging performance on his first start over hurdles, and he certainly looks to have a big season ahead of him.
