Wendigo Wins Again! Race Report – 24/01/24

In what was a phenomenal week for Racing Club, Wendigo continued his excellent start to his career with a battling victory at Catterick on Wednesday, despite carrying a 7lb penalty.

Having been sent off as a 7/4 favourite for the race, jockey Gavin Sheehan had Wendigo in a prominent position throughout, before asking for his effort with half a mile to go. After initially looking outpaced, he rallied well and stayed on strongly to win a shade cosily in the end, always doing enough to finish ahead of runner-up Wilful.

You can re-watch the final stages of the race here:

After the race, Jockey Gavin Sheehan said:

“He travelled really well throughout the race and it was a great performance. He was almost doing a bit too much early on, but he settled going up the hill and got into a nice rhythm. They went a good pace in front and once they tried to pull clear of me, that was my chance to get him going and in the run-in, I was confident we would win. He showed a great attitude and each time I’ve ridden him, he’s felt better each time.”

Trainer Jamie Snowden was full of praise the morning after the race too, stating:

“He’s a little bit tired this morning, but he trotted up sound as a pound. He did lose 20 kgs, which is a lot (usually lose between 5kgs and 25kgs), but it was a hard race for him to win and I was delighted with his effort. Obviously, his Hexham win was great, but that win yesterday under a penalty was brilliant. He showed real character and determination, and he’s a horse that has a tremendous amount of talent. He’s still a young baby in racehorse terms, and he will improve once he goes jumping, so what he is achieving now is really impressive. Looking forward, he’s ridden in his three bumpers now so the only option is to step him up into Listed/Graded bumpers. The two options are the Listed bumper at Newbury on the 10th February or the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. At this stage, I think the most realistic option would be the one at Newbury. We’ll see how he is over the next few days before making a decision.”

We’re excited to see what the future holds for our talented five-year-old, and we hope to take all our wonderful shareholders along on the journey with us!
