Brodie’s Boy Finishes Fourth On Stable Debut – Race Report

Brodie’s Boy made a pleasing start under new trainer Tony Carroll, finishing fourth at Epsom on Thursday 31st July, giving the impression that he will come on plenty for the run in the process.

Sent off as an 8/1 outsider for the race, Brodie’s Boy broke well out of the stalls and jockey Matthew Lloyd-Slater settled him towards the rear of the field, as per the instructions of trainer Tony Carroll. He stayed towards the rear of the field throughout the race, before the front runners upped the pace three furlongs out, where Brodie found himself further back than ideal. He stayed on well during the final stages, but failed to catch the front three, eventually finishing just over ten lengths off the impressive winner Carnival Day. It’s worth remembering that this was Brodie’s first race for over three months, so he will undoubtedly come on for this run.

After the race, jockey Matthew Lloyd-Slater gave us his verdict on the performance:

“He jumped lovely from the gates, and I took him back to give him a bit of cover, like Tony had instructed. Just as we turned in for home, he was just caught a little bit flat-footed. He stayed on lovely, but just didn’t have that extra gear to close the gap. He battled on tough in the final stages, and I was happy with his performance. Moving forward, I think he could do with stepping up in trip to either 1m 3f or even 1m 4f – he battles hard and is a very genuine horse.”

Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following morning:

“I thought he ran ok, and it was a good starting point for us to see where we’re at with him. I think the pace just caught him flat-footed as they came round the corner, but he stayed on well in the final stages and I’ve no doubt he’ll come on for the run. Moving forward, I do think he probably wants a bit further, and I feel he would benefit from better ground.”

With this run now under his belt, we can’t wait to see Brodie’s Boy progress under Tony, and look forward to seeing him back out on the racecourse in the near future.
