Brodie’s Boy finished seventh of nine in the Apprentices’ Derby Handicap at 3:30pm on Sunday 28th September.
Sent off at 18/1, Brodie’s Boy was settled towards the rear by jockey Matthew Lloyd Slater. As the race unfolded, those ridden prominently fought out the finish with the front three pulling four lengths clear of the remainder. The well-backed favourite Give It To Me Oj won by a length and a quarter. Brodie’s Boy and several others could not feature from the rear of the field.
After the race, jockey Matthew Lloyd Slater gave us his verdict on the performance:
“We were a bit locked away and I would have liked to get galloping a little bit earlier on. He goes well on the ground and I would say this is about his trip.”
Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following morning:
“Brodie’s Boy is fine this morning , he is back home, eaten up and he’s been out in the paddock. He’s none the worse for his run. I was just a bit disappointed, we hoped to get him close to the pace which didn’t happen. The race has taken place from the front which we thought it might do, whether he would have been good enough is another matter but the horse wasn’t really put into the race. It was a good race, there were a couple of 80 rated horses behind him so it wasn’t a disaster. The horse hasn’t done anything wrong but the position he held through the race wasn’t the correct one to have his chance. He’s come out of the race fine, so we will look forward to seeing where we go next with him. We will find an easier option but he was never put in a position to have a chance. Many thanks for your support everybody, hang in there, we will get there.”
We look forward to seeing Brodie’s Boy back in action in the near future!
