A Path To Ronda galloped on from the rear to finish seventh in the highly competitive Honeysuckle Mares Novice Hurdle on Sunday 5th April.
Our grey, priced at 22/1, settled at the rear of the field under champion jockey Sean Bowen. She appeared slightly outpaced at times, with a couple of lengths between herself and the remainder of the field at the back. As ever, she showed a great attitude, closing the gap turning for home and making steady headway into the straight. Up front, Place De La Nation and Zanoosh, who filled the first two places, had first run on the field and quickened clear. A Path To Ronda and Sean perhaps paid for the effort of coming from off the pace, leaving her unable to challenge the leaders, but she kept on well to finish seventh, with a gap of eighteen lengths back to the eighth-placed horse.
After the race, jockey Sean Bowen gave us his verdict on the performance:
“She has actually run quite well, I was in top gear a long way out and squeezing her along. She missed one hurdle but other than that she was electric, she will be a really nice chaser, probably over three miles. I thought it was a good run, she stayed on really well. She has a great attitude and you’ll have plenty of fun with her.”
Trainer Jamie Snowden reported after the race:
“She made a mistake passing the post with a circuit to go which shuffled us back when she was travelling quite strongly. Sean has had to bide his time and come with his run turning in, she looked like she was staying on for a place but they really picked up and quickened away. The exertions of getting into that position probably told inside the final furlong, but she has run well for seventh. It was a good race and the way the field quickened from the second last was pretty impressive and obviously we were coming from a long way back. Had we not made that one mistake we could’ve held our position and crept into the first five. It was still a fair effort and I’m pleased we went, but it didn’t quite happen for us today. She has had a wonderful season and we can look forward to next season.”
This was a solid performance from our mare in a high-quality contest. She has enjoyed an excellent season, providing her owners with two wins, placed efforts in a strong Listed race and a Grade 2, as well as an exciting trip across the Irish Sea. There is plenty to look forward to next season after a well-deserved break.
