We enjoyed another profitable Saturday last week, with a couple of winning selections at Cartmel’s season opener. While this Saturday’s action may not be the strongest on paper, there are still plenty of interesting races and, more importantly, some worthwhile betting opportunities. Racing Club have two runners in action this Saturday, with Lucky Luna set to line up at Chester (13:15) and Brosay heading to Carlisle (14:00). Both have reasons to be optimistic about their chances, and I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off supporting either of them.
14:53 Chester – SAVROLA (20/1 Generally Each Way)
This looks an interesting staying handicap. Believitanducan commands plenty of respect under Billy Loughnane after a convincing success at Ascot earlier this month, but at much bigger odds, SAVROLA makes some appeal.
The seven-year-old is more exposed than many of these and was disappointing on his return, but that came after a lengthy absence and he may well have needed the run. More importantly, his form from last season gives him every chance if he can bounce back.
He twice finished runner-up in this grade and also went close in Class 3 company at Hamilton, while his standout performance came in the fiercely competitive Class 2 Northumberland Vase at Newcastle. On that occasion he showed plenty of determination, rallying after being headed to regain the advantage and score by a length.
It remains to be seen whether this unique track will suit, but he is too big a price and despite being one of the highest-rated horses in the field, he appears to have been underestimated. From stall 2, he should be able to secure a prominent position if breaking well and can outrun his odds for Dianne Sayer, who has had two winners this week.
15:10 Carlisle – ESTRANGE (11/10 Generally)
ESTRANGE appeals as a strong contender on her return to action. She enjoyed an excellent campaign last season, beginning with a decisive victory in this race before adding further black-type success and proving she belonged at the highest level with a series of strong performances in Group 1 company.
Her form sets a clear standard in the context of this race and she may simply have too much class for her rivals. While softer ground would be ideal, she has shown more than enough on this type of surface to suggest conditions should not be a concern.
Waardah looks the most obvious danger, having progressed nicely through the ranks before finding life tougher in deeper company at Ascot, where she finished comfortably behind Estrange. Given the level of form that David O’Meara’s mare brings to the table, it would be disappointing if she were unable to come out on top here.
