We had a duo of horses in action on Lingfield’s card on Friday 24th January, with both Jake Loves Laura and Brodie’s Boy racing.
The first in action was Jake Loves Laura, who put in a huge performance to chase home the three market leaders in the betting to finish fourth. Having been sent off as a 33/1 outsider, Jake Loves Laura broke well out of the stalls and was prominent behind the leaders through the majority of the race. It wasn’t until the final furlong that she lost third place, eventually finishing fourth. This was an excellent effort, with the three that finished ahead of her much shorter in the betting (8/11F, 11/4 and 11/2 respectively).
After the race, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave us his summary:
“That was a really good effort from her. She’s a very straightforward filly who is tough as nails. I was never really in my comfort zone with her, so the fact she finished how she did just shows how strong a performance it was. I think she needs to go into a handicap next time out, as we don’t know how good those horses that finished ahead of her today are. I loved that performance today though, she gave me a lovely ride.”
This was another hugely promising performance from Jake Loves Laura, and we’re confident it’s only a matter of time before she gets her head in front when it matters!

Next up, Brodie’s Boy was in action, putting in a frustrating performance to only finish seventh of nine, despite being well-backed in the market.
Having broken well out of the stalls, Brodie’s took an early lead and stayed in the lead until they hit the home straight. With jockey Eddie Greatrex working hard to maintain his lead, he was headed with a furlong to go and from that point onwards, his effort rather tamed out, and he eventually finished over eight lengths behind the eventual winner Tortured Soul.
After the race, jockey Eddie Greatrex gave us his summary:
“That was a bit disappointing. We found a lovely rhythm throughout the race and I was really happy with him until we started coming down the hill. He has some sort of wind issue, which I only realised turning into the home straight. I think putting a tongue tie on him will help him out, and if that doesn’t work the team will need to look into a wind operation. Once his wind is sorted I’m confident we’ll be onto a winner!”
Although this was a frustrating effort, we now know there are reasons behind the lesser performance, and the Newlands team can now work on this ahead of his next run.
