After his excellent hurdling debut at Ffos Las, Legendary Luke made it two from two with a determined Fontwell win on 11th January, carrying a big weight on testing ground.
Legendary Luke was sent off 2/1 against eleven rivals under Gavin Sheehan, who gave him a superb ride, keeping him prominent throughout. Luke jumped and travelled well and settled nicely in front. Turning for home the leading group pulled clear and he was challenged by the well-fancied rules debutant Mr Finch, but Luke jumped the last two well and dug deep under pressure, staying on strongly up the hill to beat Manigod by a length. It was a hugely impressive display of stamina, and he once again showed his tough, professional attitude.
After the race, jockey Gavin Sheehan gave us his verdict on the performance:
“He’s so straightforward, his jumping was great. I was trying to pick my ground, it’s tough out there. He was very game and an easy ride. I loved his attitude, from the back of the last, he was all fight. It was a good weight carrying performance.”
Trainer Jamie Snowden reported the following day:
“Legendary Luke has trotted out sound and well this morning. I was thrilled to bits with him yesterday. He jumped like a future staying chaser and I thought he ran really well. He battled bravely from the back of the last up the hill to the line. He stays very well, jumps super and has a lovely attitude. He’s a really exciting horse for novice chasing next season but he is also a really exciting horse for this season too. He’s won his two races over hurdles and giving away a penalty on that sort of ground is a good performance. I think it is worth having a couple of fancy entries at The Cheltenham Festival, whilst it might be a good idea to get him qualified for the EBF Final at Sandown. We have plenty of options, we can enjoy this and look forward to the future with him.”
Legendary Luke delivered another top-class display, cementing his status as a very exciting prospect over hurdles with the scope to develop into a smart staying chaser in time. His owners enjoyed a memorable day at Fontwell and the celebrations that followed, and we’re confident more big days lie ahead.
