There’s some superb racing to look forward to this weekend in both codes, with some cracking flat racing to get stuck into at Newbury, plus one of the feature jumps meetings of the summer at Market Rasen. I’ve got a pick for each of those meetings, with each-way tips for the Summer Plate at Market Rasen and the Super Sprint at Newbury.
3:12 Market Rasen – BHALOO (12/1 generally)
The Summer Plate is always a fascinating race, and this year looks no different. Last years winner Sure Touch is rated 1lb lower this year so will be a tough nut to crack, whilst the Irish raiders Ballysax Hank and Ceanndana could be anything. However, I do feel BHALOO is overpriced, and he looks a fantastic each-way angle in the race.
The seven-year-old won on his sole previous visit to Market Rasen in a bumper back in 2023, and his record since going chasing reads 1PP136, with one of the pulled up efforts coming over three miles. On the pick of his form, he should have a big chance, particularly if the ground stays good. His run last time out when well beaten at Uttoxeter can be forgiven, as he is much more effective going right-handed than he is going left-handed. The return to a right-handed track can see him get back to his best.
It’s worth noting that Nicky Henderson’s last runner in this race was Casablanca Mix, who won it in 2019. He’s also booked James Bowen for the ride, who has won two of the last four renewals. With the hope that first-time cheekpieces eke out some improvement, and with most bookmakers offering four places, Bhaloo looks a cracking each-way play, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did win.
3:30 Newbury – ANTHELIA (5/1 generally)
Havana Hurricane is a deserved favourite in the Super Sprint, thanks to his impressive win in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. However, his draw is stall 9 isn’t ideal – the last 10 winners were all drawn in double-figure stalls, and at such a short price I’d sooner side with one each way. The one I’ve come down on is ANTHELIA.
Rod Millman’s electric filly is 3/3 over this trip, with her sole defeat coming last time out over six furlongs at Newmarket last month. Prior to that run, she ran out a good winner in a Listed race at Sandown, with Kamakameleon (who also races in this) six lengths behind. That rival finished just 2¼ lengths behind Havana Hurricane at Royal Ascot, so the form looks solid.
She’s receiving 5lbs from Havana Hurricane, is drawn well in stall 16 (7 of the last 10 winners were drawn in stalls 13-19), and looks to have a big chance in here. I’ll be disappointed if she doesn’t finish in the top three. At five times the price of Havana Hurricane, she looks the bet in the race for me!
