We’re now entering that transitional point in the season, caught between the major spring jumps festivals and the imminent start of the flat campaign, with Doncaster kicking things off next weekend. It’s a tricky period for punters, made even more challenging by the ground beginning to quicken. It’s a competitive day’s racing, so fingers crossed we can get a good run for our money with a couple of talented mares.
13:00 Kelso – HOLLYGROVE CHA CHA (2/1 Generally)
Jamie Snowden is enjoying his best season to date and sends his smart mare HOLLYGROVE CHA CHA on the long trip north to the Scottish Borders. She brings the strongest form into the race, having beaten recent Cheltenham Festival winner Holloway Queen at Sandown last year, followed by a comfortable success over a subsequent winner at Exeter, and most recently making all in Listed company at Warwick. She hit the line hard over 2m5f there, suggesting this longer trip should suit. If she settles into a nice rhythm out in front, she will be hard to beat under Gavin Sheehan.
14:10 Kelso – CHANGEMYLUCK (50/1 Generally) Each Way
The Nicky Henderson trained Khrisma will be many people’s idea of the banker of the day and has probably got a good bit in hand. She looks the likeliest winner, but in a race where five places are available with many firms, there may be better value in backing one of the other mares each way. There are a number with fair claims but at a huge price, the suggestion is CHANGEMYLUCK.
The locally trained six year old hadn’t offered much at all until running a blinder to finish three quarters of a length second at the track at the end of last month. She travelled into the race very well and may well have won if not for swerving violently at the last hurdle. She was defeated that day by Racing Club star mare A Path To Ronda, who has Grade 1 aspirations in Ireland over the Easter weekend. Rated 126, her form ties in closely with Cheltenham Festival winner White Noise (trained by Racing Club trainers Kim Bailey and Mat Nicholls), giving that piece of form a particularly solid look.
If Stuart Coltherd’s mare can back up that latest effort, she could significantly outrun her odds at a track she clearly enjoys.
