It was great to land another well-backed winner last week, with Nabati doing the business at Newbury at 7/4, having been tipped up at a much bigger 5/1 earlier in the week.
Attention turns to Newmarket this weekend, where I’ve got two strong fancies on a cracking card. We’ll be going in confidently with one selection in Group 1 company, while I’ve also picked out an each-way fancy in the ultra-competitive Cambridgeshire Handicap. Hopefully, we can keep the good run going!
15:00 Newmarket – INNER CITY BLUES (13/8 generally)
Sometimes, it pays to just stick to the tried and trusted route in betting. For example, it does usually pay to back Charlie Appleby runners at Newmarket, and that’s been the case in the Middle Park Stakes recently – he’s won the last two renewals, both with the favourite. With this in mind, it’s hard to look away from INNER CITY BLUES for this year’s renewal.
Unbeaten after two starts, including a comfortable win in a Group 2 on the July course in his most recent race, the 2YO looks a hugely exciting prospect and I would be shocked if he isn’t much better than his rivals here.
It’s also worth noting Charlie Appleby is currently in red-hot form, operating at a whopping 60% strike-rate over the past two weeks (correct at time of writing), including a double on the Friday Newmarket card. He can seemingly do little wrong of late, and let’s hope Inner City Blues can continue his hot streak on Saturday!
15:40 Newmarket – INDALO (15/2 generally)
In a wide-open renewal, it should pay to look at the recent trends for this race to whittle down the field:
- 10/10 winners aged 3-6
- 8/10 winners drawn in stall 21+ (other two were drawn 4 and 6)
- 9/10 winners rated 94+
Looking at those trends (including runners drawn 1-6 for good measure), it leaves us with five runners:
- Gavriel
- Indalo
- Hand Of God
- Asmen Warrior
- Urban Lion
Of those, I’d be pretty keen on the chances of Roger Varian’s INDALO.
The 5YO had no luck whatsoever in his last run at Goodwood, where he was hampered at virtually every opportunity at the business end of the race. I’m happy to forgive him that run, and prior to that he had run to a consistent level, winning one and placing in his other two runs this year.
He’s drawn nicely in stall 26 (five of the last ten winners were drawn 26 or higher), and I wouldn’t be put off by the fact he has to carry 9st 10lbs here – the last three winners carried 9st 12lbs. With most bookies offering 5 or 6 places (SkyBet offering seven places), Indalo looks a fantastic each-way bet and would rate my strongest E/W fancy on the card.
