Introducing Ruth Carr, a history-maker for the racing club as our first female and first Northern trainer! Ruth is a highly respected trainer based at Mowbray House in North Yorkshire. Since taking out her license in 2008, she has trained over 500 winners and more than 960 placed horses, earning a reputation for her hands-on approach and attention to each horse’s individual personality. Many of her horses spend their days turned out in paddocks, with carefully managed group dynamics that nurture their natural instincts while prioritising each horse’s specific needs.
Born into a racing family, Ruth rode for her grandfather, David Chapman. She rode 28 winners on the Flat, 8 over Hurdles, and around 20 Point-to-Point victories, also representing Great Britain internationally. Ruth assisted her grandfather for fifteen years before taking the license, learning the importance of treating every horse as an individual and keeping training routines varied and enjoyable.
Ruth Carr’s personalised approach has been highly effective, most notably rejuvenating Brazen Bolt, winner of back-to-back valuable handicaps at York and Goodwood. Her yard has also produced standout performers, including nine-time winner Reigning Profit, six-time winners Jojo Rabbit and Copper And Five, ten-time winner Hostelry, and 16-time winner Bobby Joe Leg, each thriving under her distinctive training methods.
At Mowbray House, Ruth remains involved in every aspect of her yard, from riding and starting young horses to handling entries, working with owners, and managing communications. Her dedication and personal approach make her one of the standout trainers in racing.
