Brosay Finishes Sixth At Glorious Goodwood – Race Report

It was another case of misfortune for Brosay, who suffered another troubled passage at a key point in the race, similar to what happened to him at Southwell last time out. He stayed on powerfully this time to eventually finish sixth at Goodwood on Thursday, July 31st, and it’s surely only a matter of time before he returns to the winners’ enclosure.

With the rain pouring down, Brosay was well backed before the off and was sent off an 11/1 shot, which looked generous considering his form on heavy ground and having won over C&D previously. Having broken slower than ideal out of the stalls, jockey David Probert settled him towards the rear of the field, and quickly got into an awkward position with horses on either side of him. With the pace quickening, Brosay continued to have a wall of horses in front of him and was boxed in at a crucial point. Once a gap opened, he flew home and passed plenty of his rivals to eventually finish sixth, two lengths behind the winner Naana’s Sparkle.

After the race, jockey David Probert gave us his verdict on the performance:

“He jumped ok out of the stalls, but it did put me on the back foot slightly, and I was happy enough to just work away on him. I had horses surrounding me, so I didn’t get much of a chance to make a move, so I had to wait for one of them to drop away before asking him for his effort. It just happened a furlong too late for me, and I just couldn’t make up the ground on those ahead of me like I had hoped. He’s hit the line well, and I just feel we were a bit unfortunate with how the race panned out. I think a stiff five furlongs is right up his street, and he loved the ground – he just needs that bit of luck in running.”

Trainer Paul Attwater reported the following morning:

“I’m pleased to report he’s come out of the race in A1 condition – he’s trotted up sound this morning and eaten up, so that’s good news. It was a frustrating performance yesterday, he’s ran his socks off considering the circumstances, and I’m sure he’d have finished closer had he not met trouble in running. I think moving forwards we will likely step him up in trip, with a couple of options we’re looking at him later this month.”

This was another frustrating performance, as Brosay encountered trouble running yet again. We’re keeping out fingers crossed that it won’t be long before we see him back in the winners’ enclosure.
