After a promising third at Brighton, Unknown Journey was slightly disappointing at Bath on Saturday 13th September.
Unknown Journey was keen down to post and continued that through the majority of the race. He broke nicely from stall twelve, allowing him to race prominently. He pressed the leader two furlongs out but the effects of refusing to settle soon became apparent as he did not have the energy to maintain his challenge and several of the field passed him in the straight.
To his credit, Unknown Journey stuck to the task and was not beaten far in the end, losing out by three and a half lengths. He appeared to stay on at the finish and showed a good attitude.
After the race, jockey Jack Doughty gave us his verdict on the performance:
“He’s run well enough, from the wide draw it’s always going to be hard getting cover. He was just too free down to post and was lit up straight away and never really wanted to relax. He travelled well on the girth of the leader when he finally relaxed but when I let him down he didn’t really find anything. Perhaps a softer surface might suit him, you might be able to get him to relax a bit more as they’ll be taking their time more. But he was just too free today, being out on that wing with no cover he was doing too much too early. I thought he stayed on well towards the end, we maybe got outstayed by a few that stay further than this.”
Trainer Tony Carroll reported the following morning:
“ Unknown Journey obviously run too free, very very keen with Jack. It’s disappointing because the two times he’s ridden him have been his worst two runs. I think we’ll have to change things from on top because others have ridden him from the yard and not had a problem. Jack’s ridden him twice and just over-raced with him both times, so unfortunately it was a non-event for me. He needs to settle in and pick the race up as he goes along but over-racing like he did and running too keen early on, it’s just not going to happen as we want. So sorry about that, we’ll get it right someday soon.”
We are certain Unknown Journey will be able to bounce back and deliver on the promise he has shown and look forward to seeing him back on course soon!
