After his solid third at the track last time, Brodie’s Boy was unable to build on that effort when he returned to Southwell on 20th January.
Sent off at 9/1 in a field of seven, Brodie’s Boy was rousted along from stall one by Marco Ghiani into third position along the rail. Run at a steady tempo, the race developed into a tightly bunched affair with little change in the order, Brodie’s Boy still sharing third. Turning into the straight around three furlongs out, it became a sprint and, as a strong galloper, he was caught out for pace, drifting towards the centre of the track and away from where the main action unfolded. With the race not playing to his strengths, he kept on steadily to the line to finish fifth.
After the race, jockey Marco Ghiani gave us his verdict on the performance:
“He jumped well, one came straight in front of me and he settled really nicely. Unfortunately we went really slow and it became a sprint from the four furlongs out. He certainly feels it when they sprint away. If there was more pace in the race he would run much better. Next time, if there is no pace I would probably make the running.”
Trainer Tony Carroll reported following the race :
“We’ll have a bit of luck with him one day! He jumped ok from his draw, the one in front of him steadied the pace. They wandered round and sprinted up the straight. We were on the wrong side of the track too, the race was taking place on the other side to him. It’s not nice when you are out there on your own paddling away. I’ll try and get him back to Kempton where you might get a stronger pace and a longer straight. Thank you all for your support. ”
Unfortunately, the way the race unfolded didn’t suit Brodie’s Boy at all. Despite that, his owners still enjoyed a great evening at Southwell, and we look forward to seeing him back in action soon — hopefully in a more truly run contest that plays to his strengths.
