The Flat season is upon us, with Doncaster and Kempton hosting two cracking cards packed with highly competitive races. So much so, it may be worth sitting back and enjoying them rather than getting too heavily involved from a punting perspective. Maybe Nevernotrememberu (13:20), Montassib (13:50) and Eternal Force (15:32) can give punters a good run for their money at Doncaster. However, I will be sticking to the slightly calmer waters of Stratford! Unfortunately, last week’s big-priced selection was a non-runner and, given how the race unfolded, she could well have had a say. This week, I have another at big odds to keep things interesting, along with one to add to your accumulators.
15:57 Stratford – HARBOUR LIGHT (1/1 Generally)
The Twiston-Davies-trained HARBOUR LIGHT ran well to finish second at Chepstow last month behind a subsequent winner. He has since bolted up by seven lengths over this course and distance in the same grade under Sam Twiston-Davies, scoring with plenty in hand. He should be able to defy a 7lb penalty in what looks a weak race, with Churchman the main danger.
17:08 Stratford – GET THE VALUE (33/1 Generally) Each Way
This selection is less obvious than the first. Morning Mayhem looks the likeliest winner, but GET THE VALUE looks interesting in a race that has a nice each way makeup. His recent form figures of P804 are uninspiring at first glance, but he has had excuses. He needs good ground, which he hasn’t encountered on his last two starts, and prior to that he ran in a good Class 3 handicap at Newbury. He was also sent off 13/8 favourite at Newton Abbot when fourth of four, where he lost a shoe.
On the face of it, he appears to have lost his way, but the return to more suitable conditions could see a revival. He won a Class 5 at this track on good ground at this time last year and followed up at Newton Abbot with a win and a second. Back at a track he enjoys, on his preferred ground, and in a grade he can be competitive in, he looks worthy of a small each-way play at a big price.
