Once again, we enjoyed a profitable weekend, with two winning selections combining to land a 33/1 double and continuing our good recent run of form.This weekend feels very much like the calm before the Royal Ascot storm. It looks a fairly tricky day from a betting perspective, with several competitive races across the cards and few obvious standout opportunities. With that in mind, it may pay to keep stakes sensible ahead of what promises to be an excellent week of Flat racing. At the shorter prices, I expect Obsessedwithyou (14:17) and Ghasham (14:55) to win at Hexham.
13:25 Downpatrick – ARDEEN JOY (9/4 Generally)
There is not much depth to this mares’ maiden hurdle and Gordon Elliott’s ARDEEN JOY looks to have been found a good opportunity. On her latest start at Limerick, she travelled strongly into contention and still held every chance when coming down at the final flight. That effort built on an encouraging run at Cork, sets the form standard, and suggests she is heading in the right direction. Provided she has suffered no ill effects from that recent fall, which this quick reappearance suggests is the case, she can make amends here. Spring Waltz is respected after her point-to-point success and rates the clear danger.
16:37 Chester – SAVROLA (16/1 Generally Each Way)
SAVROLA has a little to prove after a below-par return from a lengthy absence, but he is entitled to come on for that outing last month and has a major chance if rediscovering last season’s form.
He was a consistent performer last season running in stronger races, including a narrow defeat in a Class 3 contest at Hamilton. His standout effort came when landing the competitive Northumberland Vase at Newcastle, where he showed plenty of determination to regain the lead after being headed.
While this track presents a different challenge, he looks overpriced on the strength of his overall profile. One of the highest-rated runners in the field, he has the class to be competitive and, if able to secure a decent early position from stall eleven, can outrun his odds for a yard going well.
