Our two bay geldings featured at opposite ends of Kempton’s Wednesday evening card on 10th June and both produced encouraging performances, offering plenty of optimism for the future. They were cheered on by more than 30 Racing Club members in attendance, who enjoyed a fantastic evening at the West London track.
After an encouraging reappearance at the same venue, Karthon returned to action in the 17:08 over 2m under Mason Paetel. He was slightly inconvenienced leaving the stalls as two rivals edged across in front of him, but he soon found his rhythm and settled comfortably in midfield. With the field setting only a steady gallop, there was little change in the order throughout the race. Turning for home, Karthon was travelling strongly and appeared poised to challenge, waiting for a gap to open at the cutaway. However, he did not quite see out the trip and was unable to sustain his effort against the leaders in the closing stages. He eventually finished fourth, but once again shaped with plenty of promise and there were positives to take from the performance.
Blackwaterfoot had been unfortunate to miss some suitable opportunities due to the ground, so it was pleasing to see him back in action at Kempton. While we know he is at his best on turf, it was important to get a run into him and this reappearance should set him up well for the remainder of the season. He travelled well through the race and made encouraging headway turning into the straight, passing several rivals as he moved into contention. The lack of a recent run told in the closing stages, however, and he tired late on to finish eleventh of fourteen. Despite that, there was plenty of encouragement to take from the performance and he should come on significantly for the outing, both in terms of fitness and confidence, ahead of his next start back on grass.
Jockey/Trainer Comments:
“Jockey Mason Paetel felt that by the time Karthon got a gap in the straight, the leaders had already gone. He said Karthon didn’t quite have the turn of foot to reel them in and instead stayed on at the same pace to the line. Mason also felt they were a little disadvantaged by being stuck on the rail for much of the race, but he remains confident that Karthon is more than capable of winning races.”
“Jockey Sean Levey was pleased with Blackwaterfoot and how he moved through the race but suggested he wasn’t quite quick enough to get into a good position in the finish. He believes some softer ground on the turf will suit him well and bring out the best in him, as we saw at Ffos las.”
“Trainer Charlie Pike was happy with Blackwaterfoot, who understandably needed the run and should come on plenty for it. He has come out of the race in good order and holds an entry at Ffos Las over the same distance as his victory there last year.”
It was a fantastic evening and great to see so many of our owners in attendance. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with our trainers and jockeys, while also making the most of Kempton’s excellent hospitality. We look forward to many more enjoyable evenings like this throughout the season.
