The Sandown card looks an absolute cracker on Saturday, so that is where my focus is. I’ve picked out two at tempting odds, including my fancy for the opener, plus an each-way angle to take on Ombudsman in the Coral-Eclipse.
1:50 Sandown – KERDOS (4/1 generally)
The Coral Charge kicks off the Sandown card on Saturday, and I’ve had a look through some of the recent trends of winners in the race to try and whittle down the field:
- 7 of the last 8 winners came from stalls 1-6.
- Only 1 winner in the last 10 years won at double-figure odds.
- Each of the last four renewals was won by a five-year-old.
Just focusing on these trends narrows down the field to two runners – KERDOS and Rumstar, and it’s the former who gets my vote.
Clive Cox’s sprinter has been racing solely in Group 1 and 2 company for the past 12 months, running well without getting his head in front. His run last time out was excellent, finishing fifth in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, despite unseating his jockey on the way to the stalls. I believe his run can be upgraded, considering he came out of stall 3 – all of the other runners to finish in the top eight came from stalls 10 or higher.
Top jockey Christophe Soumillon was on board that day, and he’s been booked for the ride again, which is a huge plus in my opinion. I think he’s the class angle in this race and with a plum draw in stall 5, he looks the one to beat.
3:35 Sandown – CAMILLE PISSARRO (15/2 generally)
The Coral-Eclipse looks an absolute belter of a race this year, with eight Group 1’s won by the six runners, and there is every chance that Royal Ascot winner Ombudsman could prove a class above his rivals again here. However, he’s now odds-on with most bookmakers and I believe there is more value in taking him on, particularly with CAMILLE PISSARRO.
A P O’Brien’s talented 3YO signed off last season with a Group 1 win, ahead of the likes of Henri Matisse and Field Of Gold, who have both won Group 1’s since. He’s reappeared this season with some notable efforts, including when finishing third in the French 2,000 Guineas, when drawn wider than ideal. His best effort came last time out though, where he was stepped up in trip to 1m 2f in the French Derby, running out a cosy winner having had to wait for a gap at a crucial stage of the race.
With Ryan Moore opting to ride Delacroix, it means Christophe Soumillon is on board again, which isn’t a bad alternative at all! With three-year-olds winning each of the last four renewals, I think Camille Pissarro could be the one to serve it up to Ombudsman, and although you will only get two places, he looks a great each-way bet.
